Process paper
At the end of the last school year, I attended a briefing about this year‘s topic. I knew right away that I did not want to conduct my research on slavery, politics, or war. I then decided to do my topic on pirates because I have always expressed an interest in them. Once school commenced, I realized my topic was too broad. I then narrowed it down to one pirate, Stede Bonnet. I found interest in him because of his background as a wealthy plantation owner and he had a large effect on South Carolina.
Before I narrowed my topic, I went to a pirate festival in Charleston, South Carolina. There I learned more about pirates in the area and was able to purchase a book on Stede Bonnet. This book, and festival, sparked my interest in Stede Bonnet. Second, I went to other places in Charleston, like where he was hung. I then went to a museum in Southport, North Carolina which was right next to the Cape Fear River. This river is where Stede Bonnet had a battle with William Rhett, also known as the Battle of the Sandbars or the Battle of Cape Fear River. After, I went to the Kimbel Library, several times, and the South Carolina Archives. I also purchased several books on Stede Bonnet.
After I finished writing my paper on Stede Bonnet, I had to choose which category would best suit my information. I decided to do a website. I knew it would be the best because I could have images, videos, music, and text all in one. Also I had an interest in computers and have always wanted to create a website. Once I decided I was creating a website, I started by adding a title, images, and text, I then added more pages, images, and text. One thing I found difficult was adding music to my website. I had this perfect song but when I tried adding it an error or oops pop-up appeared on my screen. After many days of fiddling with it, I was finally able to add it.
My project relates to the NHD theme through the leadership and legacy of Stede Bonnet. Stede Bonnet studied Blackbeard and learned how to convert into a pirate. He therefore led his crew which displayed his leadership. Bonnet adapted to a life of piracy, choose this over a life of leisure, and had an effect on the Carolinas; therefore establishing his historical legacy.
